Key Burden Statistics: 2024 BFMV Physician Call Coverage Burden & Compensation Survey
Not only is BFMV’s sixth annual direct-to-physician call coverage survey an affordable source of physician call coverage compensation information, the BFMV survey is unique in that it provides statistics related to the "burden" of call, including in-person visits and phone call volumes for a variety of specialties. The following is a summary of key burden statistics from the 2024 survey.
1. Median Days of Coverage per Month
Data for physicians in pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatrics, neurointerventional radiology, and neurology-stroke yielded medians of 10 or more days of call coverage per month. Smaller department size often means fewer physicians in the call rotation and more call days per month for many of these specialties.
2. Phone Calls per Shift
In looking at the number of phone calls received per shift, the highest means we found ranged from 9 to 11 phone calls per 24-hour shift for respondents in trauma surgery, nephrology, critical care, cardiology, and neurology-stroke.
3. In-Person Visits per Shift
At the mean, responding physicians in trauma surgery, emergency medicine, vascular surgery, anesthesiology, and general surgery respond in person nearly 3 to 4 times per call shift.
